STORSLEY BISON RANCH

how it all began

NEW HOME, NEW LAND
A HUNDRED YEARS AGO

Our story began with a dream, a family, and a patch of land. Over 100 years ago, our great-grandfather, James Storsley immigrated from Norway, farming first in South Dakota and then in Manitoba. His son took over the family dairy farm at age 18, when his father suddenly and tragically passed. Young Bill worked to saved the farm and provide for his mother and siblings. Farmers work hard and they work together. When a fire claimed his home and family photographs one winter,  Bill and his wife and five children survived. The local community rallied, building a one-room house and providing clothing and provisions.  That building still stands as a symbol of resilience.

A NEW BISON RANCH IN 1995

In 1995, life took another turn. With every obstacle is an opportunity. Garnet's doctor urged him to make a change - he needed to step away from dairy farming. This was hard news. He saw opportunity in change and purchased a small herd of bison, drawn by their strength and he put them on his land. With care and dedication, the Storsley Bison Ranch was born—a testament to passion, adaptability, and the enduring bond between family and farm.

GARNET, THE LAND AND THE ANIMALS

This spirit of perseverance carried through the generations. Garnet Storsley, the youngest son, faced a pivotal choice: accept a football scholarship or take over the family farm. His heart chose the land and the animals. After earning a degree in agriculture, Garnet and his wife turned the farm into a thriving dairy operation.

FAMILY LEGACY LIVES ON

Farming has taught us a beautiful way of life. As a family, we learned to work together for the sake of the greater good, rain or shine, through thick and thin. Simplicity is not always easy. While farming, Garnet and Carleigh raised three children instilling in them good work ethic, a love for the land, teamwork, and the art of taking good care of animals.

A farm family is a salt-of-the-earth family, and ours is a faith-filled family. We have learned to be ever thankful for our blessings. We have learned that each and every day - with the rising of the sun  - presents new mercies afresh.

Whether herding, calving, tending, or going to local farmers' markets, Garnet and Carleigh's family, including their grandchildren, have had many rich opportunities to grow in this  life-giving environment.

Presently, Jordan regularly attends the St. Norbert Farmers' Market and serves on the board. He helps to take care of the herd and the land, and works alongside Garnet in the business, besides his regular full-time job as a welder.

Our family table is a celebration. We eat together, make plans together, listen to Garnet's crazy dad jokes, catch up on the latest bison tales, and laugh together, enjoying each other's company.
